Today, the MAGA majority on the House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations held a hearing designed to intimidate environmental nongovernmental organizations. Ranking Member Melanie Stansbury, pushed back forcefully on MAGA majority hearing witnesses, noting their dark money ties and efforts to advance the extreme Project 2025 scheme, a blueprint for a conservative presidential term that aims to impose an extreme, unpopular agenda on Americans, consolidating power and undermining democratic principles.

In response to the hearing, Accountable.US released the following statement from its President, Caroline Ciccone:

Powerful corporate special interests will be the biggest winners if Chairman Gosar and his allies succeed in eroding the ability of citizen organizations to hold them accountable. These groups are an important check on corporate and government power, so it’s no wonder the MAGA majority that tried to undermine a free and fair election is now laying the groundwork for the Project 2025 scheme by trying to silence them. Just as we saw during the Bundy family’s violent occupation of federal public lands, the opposition to effectively managing public resources for the public’s benefit depends on attacking democracy.”

Oversight subcommittee Chair Gosar has been a leading supporter of the Big Lie about the 2020 election and an opponent of the same conservation protections that corporate special interests fight:

  • Gosar urged Trump supporters to “join” him on January 6th to “Fight For Trump” because he believed the election was “stolen.”
  • Gosar Is an outspoken defender of the rioters, who he calls “Peaceful Protestors,” and that videos showing otherwise are “lies.”
  • Gosar is a longtime, outspoken critic of public lands protections and tried to sell off Arizona’s public lands.
  • Gosar is in favor of mining anywhere and everywhere. Even on the doorstep of Indigenous sacred sites like the Grand Canyon and Chaco Canyon.
  • Gosar believes that protecting sage grouse Is “one of the greatest threats to the west.”
  • Gosar opposes national monument protections and received $87,053 from the oil and gas industry.

Accountable.US has extensively documented how large corporations continued to make campaign contributions to members of Congress who supported the Big Lie about the 2020 election, as well as the links between insurrectionists and the opponents of land conservation.
